Artistic Impression

About Jurgen.

Jurgen's journey began on the 5th of October, 1963, in The Hague. His lineage is rooted in creativity as the son of Aris van Braam, an emeritus professor at the University of Leiden, and Guurtje Sint.

The spark of Jurgen's artistic expression ignited during his childhood, blossoming at the tender age of 8 or 9. A move in 1973 from Rotterdam to the enchanting "Zaanse Schans" in Zaandam marked a significant chapter. Among the treasures of that time is a cherished 1973 drawing depicting his father lounging on their yacht.

At the age of 16, in 1980, Jurgen embarked on a maritime voyage, serving as an AB aboard the mv Polydorus. By late 1981, his navigational pursuits led him to Amsterdam's navigation college, where he earned his chief mate's ticket for deep-sea exploration.

Despite the maritime calling, Jurgen's passion for painting persisted. The canvas became his sanctuary during leave periods, capturing the essence of his journeys and holidays through sketches and photographs.

Karel Appel stands as Jurgen's artistic muse, while his wife, Inez Zijdevelt, serves as the catalyst for translating emotions, thoughts, and impressions onto the canvas.

"Artistic Impression," a virtual realm meticulously crafted by Jurgen's eldest son, Lars van Braam, offers a glimpse into his creative opus. While this collection is a testament to his artistry, numerous paintings and drawings from the past remain unphotographed or lost in the tumultuous waves of solitary times. Over time, a substantial portion of Jurgen's creations found new homes through sales and gifts. Some even took form upon commission. Presently, his body of work comprises an estimated 450 pieces.
